Three men have been jailed for ten years for torturing a man because they suspected him of stealing a mobile phone.
The men, all unemployed, Indian and in their mid-20s, stripped their victim of his clothes, tied him up and punched and kicked him. The men also burned his legs with a hot knife and stubbed cigarettes out on his body.
They were charged with illegally imprisoning the man, who is 21, and assaulting him. They denied the charges at an earlier hearing.
The incident happened last August when the victim, a cook, returned to his lodgings in Bur Dubai. The three men were waiting for him and accused him of stealing a mobile phone that belonged to one of them.
The victim denied the theft, at which point the men viciously attacked him. His ordeal went on for nearly 12 hours before he managed to escape.
“I asked them to untie me so I could go to the bathroom, where I managed to escape through the window,” he said.
“I went to the home of a friend and then I told the police what happened.”
A medical examination at Rashid Hospital revealed burns and bruising on various parts of his body, however he had suffered no serious injuries or disability.
