Ultraswimmer Jason Thom completed the first ever swim between Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Jumeirah in five hours yesterday.
“I’m delighted but it was frustrating out there,” Thom said as he arrived safely at the Meridien beach resort at the base of Palm Jumeirah.
“The current was pushing me toward the beach at Jumeirah Beach Residence.
“I could see the Jumeirah palm in the distance, but I thought I would never get there,” he said.
The event, from 10am to 3pm, took longer than expected as Jason swerved closer to the shore than initially planned.
“I ended up ahead of my safety boat, so I was leading them on. About three-quarters of the way, it was really tough but then it got much stronger again towards the end,” he said.
Thom completed the 25km swim on World Diabetes Day to raise awareness of the disease, which is prevalent in the UAE.
