A drunk driver who killed a teenage cyclist on a Dubai road has been jailed for just one year.
The 29-year-old Indian driver smashed into the 18-year-old Sri Lankan who had stopped at red lights on Jumeirah Road last month, crushing him between the vehicle and signal.
“The victim was trapped between the Indian’s car and the light.
The victim was seriously hurt,” Prosecutor Salah Bu Farousha, head of Dubai Traffic Prosecution said.
“Ambulances rushed to the scene but he died on the way to Rashid Hospital,” he went on to add.
The driver was charged with drink driving, causing the death of a person and damaging property.
The incident happened on October 17 at traffic lights near Jumeirah Clinic.
Dubai Traffic Prosecution had asked the court for a harsh sentence in the case and vowed to catch those driving under the influence of alcohol.
“We won’t be easy with any drunk driver who neglects others lives by driving their vehicle after drinking alcohol,” Bu Farousha added.
“Motorists should follow the traffic rules and regulations to protect their lives and those of other road users.
“We will make a stand against drunk drivers.”
The driver was told he would be deported upon serving his prison sentence.
He was also ordered to pay the victim’s family dhs200,000 in blood money.
The court also ordered that his driving licence be revoked for a year.
