The kidnapping occurred nautical 550 miles (1,000 kilometers) northeast of the Seychelles and 700 nautical miles off the eastern coast of Somalia, the main territory of the pirates.

“On the advice of an attack by a maritime patrol aircraft NAVFOR EU, operating from the Seychelles was launched to investigate the incident,” the EU naval mission in a statement from its headquarters in Britain.

The vessel was not registered in the Horn of Africa Maritime Security Center, the statement said.

According to the International Ecoterra non-governmental observers, at least 174 attacks have been carried out by Somali pirates since the beginning of 2009 only, including 49 successful hijackings.
