A teenager has been given a new lease of life after under-going a rare facial operation. ?
Doctors at Al Qassemi Hospital in Sharjah performed the ten-hour surgery on 14-year-old Dana Maher, who had been having problems breathing and eating because a birth defect meant her lower jaw was larger than her upper jaw.
Maher said she could only breathe through her mouth.
Speaking after recovering from the operation this week, a beaming Dana, who is from Palestine, said: “I am happy now. I wish I could give something to the doctors who did so much for me. I am so grateful to them.”
Dr Mark Karas, a specialist in maxillofacial surgery at the hospital, said: “The surgery has given a great psychological boost to Dana.
“She used to hate herself and never socialised. Now her life has changed. She speaks and smiles and goes out frequently.”
He said that if the surgery had not been performed the dis-order could have caused Dana more psychological damage.
The hospital carried out the operation free of charge at the end of May.
