New Chelsea left winger Yuri Zhirkov has revealed it could be a while before he can communicate with his team mates - because he did not take the advice of the club’s billionaire owner Roman Abramovich to learn English seriously enough.
The 25-year-old Russian international, who joined the Stamford Bridge outfit from CSKA Moscow for a around $29million, said Abramovich had told him to learn English more than three years ago but he? just ignored it.
“Abramovich came to our (CSKA) dressing room to congratulate the team on winning the Russian Cup final in May 2006,” the left winger said. “Then, he suddenly turned to me and said: ‘Yuri, start learning English’. I didn’t say anything, just smiled. Unfortunately, I still have not learnt the language.
“Now I know I should have taken his advice more seriously, but back then I didn’t think I would ever need it for my football.”
AC Milan have responded to criticism from fans furious at a perceived lack of big-name investment by making their first transfer ‘splash’ of the summer - but it is unlikely to appease incensed fans. ?
The San Siro giants have snapped up United States defender Oguchi Onyewu from Standard Liege. The 27-year-old centre-back had come to the end of his contract but holds a Belgian passport so will not be counted as a non-EU player.
English Championship side Sheffield United have suspended goalkeeper Paddy Kenny after he failed a drugs test.
Kenny, 31, faces a ban after the urine sample he provided after May’s play-off semi-final against Preston was found to contain traces of the banned drug ephedrine.
“We can confirm that Paddy Kenny has been suspended by the club. This is an ongoing, confidential matter and as such we are unable to comment further,” a Sheffield United spokesman said.
Kenny, a Republic of Ireland international, now faces an FA disciplinary inquiry and possible two-year ban.
Ephedrine is on the list of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) banned substances but it is contained in treatments for the common cold and a positive test does not bring an automatic two-year ban.
