Jamie Carragher is ready to show anyone who has written off Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge already just how wrong they are.
The Anfield outfit have faced fierce criticism after losing two of their opening three league games, with some observers thinking Rafa Benitez’s side have already blown their chances of mounting a serious bid for the league this term.
The Mersey Reds hit back by coming from behind to beat Bolton 3-2 at the weekend, though, and defender Carragher believes that result shows how strong the team’s character is.
The uncompromising stopper suggested that it was when the chips were down that Liverpool, who are eyeing a first league title since 1990, are at their
most dangerous.
“We have taken a bit of criticism and rightly so, because we haven’t made the best of starts,” said the 31-year-old, whose team picked up 22 points after going behind last season. “But no-one can ever write us off. Ourselves and Manchester United, not just in this league but probably anywhere in the world, are the best at coming back from deficits and winning games.
“At Bolton, the lads showed what great character we have.
“It was so important to get those three points, especially with the international break coming up.”
Meanwhile, one player not as fired up to prove Liverpool’s detractors wrong is Dutch winger Ryan Babel.
The Reds flyer has struggled to break into the first-team at Anfield since arriving from Ajax in 2007 and has revealed he’d consider a return to the Amsterdam Arena in January to secure a spot in his national side for next year’s World Cup.
“There have been a lot of things promised, but they haven’t been followed up,” Babel said. “I would get to play for more minutes and have more chances, but after the first defeat, I lost my place. I think half a season at Ajax with a view to the World Cup wouldn’t be a bad idea. I can add something to the Ajax squad.
“Loaning me out was not an option (in the summer). We have agreed to review the situation in January. I really have to get playing.”?
