Grant denied as Rooney’s trick ruins big debut

If Avram Grant was in any doubt as just to how different his job at Portsmouth will be to his time at Chelsea he won’t have now after Wayne Rooney ran the Premier League’s basement boys ragged at Fratton Park.

The last time Grant faced Rooney and Co was in the 2008 Champions League final in Moscow.

On that occasion he narrowly lost out in what turned out to be his final game in charge of the Blues.

Yesterday was supposed to be his big day back in the spotlight as he set about trying to plot struggling Portsmouth’s great escape from what looks like certain relegation, having taken over from the sacked Paul Hart.

Instead, Rooney bagged his first United hat-trick for three years. The England striker converted two penalties either side of a fine finish from a Ryan Giggs pass as United ruined Grant’s big day to stay on the trail of Chelsea.

An early Rooney foray down the left caught Younes Kaboul off-balance but the French defender did enough to put him off his stride.

United continued to stretch the home defence and a corner by Giggs was rolled into Paul Scholes on the edge of the penalty area but the midfielder’s first-time drive was placed a yard over Asmir Begovic’s crossbar.

Portsmouth were playing with confidence under their new boss and almost stole the lead as Jamie O’Hara and Kevin-Prince Boateng combined to feed Aruna Dindane but the Ivorian’s scrambled effort was kept away by the outstretched frame of Tomasz Kuszczak.

United however, got the first breakthrough of an entertaining opening.

Rooney played a one-two with Antonio Valencia and as he moved away from goal found his heel clipped by Michael Brown. He picked himself up and dispatched the spot-kick high into the net.

But Pompey refused to role over and were awarded a lifeline just eight minutes later, assistant referee Simon Beck catching Nemanja Vidic tugging Frederic Piquionne’s shirt in the area.

It seemed a harsh decision but Boateng, who missed from 12 yards last week against Stoke, needed no second invite to drive the kick home.

After the shock of conceding an equaliser to the strugglers had finally sunk in, United regrouped at the interval.

They were soon back in front when Valencia’s measured pass found Giggs in behind Marc Wilson. The Welsh winger in turn picked out Rooney, who converted from eight yards out.

The three points were then secured after Giggs was tripped in the box and Rooney smashed home of third of the game.

The rout was complete when the impressive Giggs capped a fine display, curling home a 20-yard free-kick.
