Chelsea tightened their grip at the top of the Premier League with a crushing victory over Wolves.
In their first league match since beating rivals Manchester United before the international break, Carlo Ancelotti’s side produced a clinical performance to send Wolves home with their tails between their legs.
The Blues made light of the absence of usual goal threats Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba to smash in four goals.
But it was Wolves’ shocking defending rather than Chelsea’s flowing attacking that allowed the hosts to take the lead.
Florent Malouda picked up the ball and as the Wolves defenders backed off, the winger strolled forward before firing a bullet left-foot drive into the top corner.
The visitors’ defence then allowed Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien space to head home a corner at the near post.
Essien made it 3-0 when the Wolves’ defence once again huffed and puffed and keeper Wayne Hennessey allowed Essien’s scuffed shot to skip through him and into the net.
Wolves managed to get to the break without any more damage, but just ten minutes into the second half, Chelsea made it a four-star performance when the hapless Hennessey allowed Joe Cole’s 20-yard drive to zip past him.
With the game won, Ancelotti was able to ease off the accelerator as the seconds ticked away.
Anelka was replaced Gael Kakuta, the French teenager whose signing from Lens provoked Chelsea’s hotly-disputed 12-month transfer ban from FIFA.
The 18-year-old showed some neat touches in his cameo, and might have scored when he broke through on the right only to slam his shot into the side-netting. Essien came agonisingly close to notching a hat-trick when his long-range shot was parried onto the top of the crossbar by Hennessey.
This was Chelsea’s day and, on this evidence, it could well be their season.
