Australia may have fallen well short in their quest for an Autumn Grand Slam, but coach Robbie Deans still declared himself satisfied after they rounded off their tour with glory in Cardiff.
The Wallabies opened the European leg of the tour with a victory over England but were held to a draw in Ireland before suffering a shock defeat to Scotland.
But they signed off with a comfortable 33-12 win over the Welsh, as centre Digby Ioane, lock James Horwill, flanker David Pocock and replacement hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau all crossed in front of 74,000 at the Millennium Stadium. And Deans was clearly delighted after copping some flak Down Under following a woeful Tri-Nations campaign.
Deans said: “I’m happy with the way the group’s coming together. It’s a young group but they’ve grown in maturity on and off the field and that inevitably manifests itself in time.
“We are stoked this group took the step they did. We have been close but the boys got it done.”
New Zealander Deans had masterminded just two wins in 11 Tests prior to the Cardiff date and he added: “Progress has been made, maybe it’s not always evident on the scoreboard. Maybe they underestimated us and thought we were there for the taking.”
