Big guns looking to Slam home a warning in UAE

Roger Federer? and Rafa Nadal are on track for a winner takes all clash in the UAE at the start of next year after both players confirmed their entry for the second Capitala World Tennis Championship.

The sport’s top two stars will be joined in the exhibition tournament, from December 31 to January 2, by world No.7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Russian ace Nikolay Davydenko, world No.9 Fernando Verdasco and this year’s French Open finalist Robin Soderling.

Federer and Nadal had been expected to battle it out for the inaugural Capitala crown at the start of the this year, but Andy Murray threw a spanner in the works by going all the way at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex at Zayed Sports City.

The top-ranked duo will again get a bye through the first day and will take on the winners of the first-round matches in the Friday semi-finals. The final will take place the very next day. And fans will be treated to an extra match this year, with a third/fourth place play-off added to the schedule - to be held before that clash.

With Murray missing this year, Federer and Nadal will be favourites to reach the showpiece match, but the other four players will not be in the UAE capital just to make up the numbers.

With the Australian Open a few weeks later the game’s stars will be looking to test themselves ahead of the year’s first Grand Slam, meaning fans can expect top quality tennis, despite it being an exhibition event.

Greg Sproule, of tournament managers IMG, said: “This is a Grand Slam player field, but we have gone right to the quarter-finals.

“The players are once again going to be kicking off their year in Abu Dhabi.

“Last year’s two hour, 45 minute final between Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray showed just how competitive this event is and the players are using it as a build up to the first Slam of the year.

“The courts and the balls and everything will be exactly what they will get in Melbourne for the Australian Open so it will be a good build up for them.”

The winner of the event will pack a $250,000 cheque in his kitbag en-route Down Under, but organisers insist it is the chance to test their game early in the year that will be the driving force for six of the world’s top 11 players in Abu Dhabi.

“If you’re the best in the world you don’t back down from anything,” said John Lickrish of Flash Entertainment.

“Everybody likes the format, the players test each other.”

World No.1 Federer is out to improve on his performance in the inaugural championship as he said: “The line-up this year is very strong once again and I’m looking forward to it.”

As well as watching the top-class action fans can be part of proceedings by taking in the free-to-enter tennis village at Zayed Sports City.

Federer wannabes can also enter the Capitala Community Cup, with four places up for grabs to enjoy an exclusive clinic with one of the stars during the tournament.
