Roger Federer? claims Juan Martin del Potro could be the man to break his and Rafael Nadal’s grip on men’s tennis.
That bold prediction came after the Argentine ace shocked the Swiss sensation to win the US Open 3-6, 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2.
After a dodgy start the 20-year-old overpowered the world No.1 to claim his first Grand Slam victory. And Federer feels it could well be the first of many.
“Rafa (Nadal), we’ve had some epic great ones over the years,” the 15-time Grand Slam winner said.? “Who knows? Maybe Del Potro is going to join that thing as well.”
On his march to the title Del Potro beat Nadal and showed in New York he has the game to scale the heights of the men’s game for years to come.
But despite Federer’s glowing assessment, the world No.6 isn’t getting ahead of himself. Shocked at claiming one of tennis’ big prizes, and the game’s biggest scalp, the Argentine wants to take it one step at a time before dreaming of more mega-glory.
“I just want to live this moment,” Del Potro said. “I have new opportunities in the other Grand Slams to win. If I here beat Nadal, Federer and many good players, maybe I can do it one more time.
“But of course it will be difficult because I was so close to losing.”
Del Potro amazed even himself by rallying from a two sets to one down to beat the player seen by most as the greatest in tennis history after his unprecedented Slam success.
“Maybe next week I will be believing in this, but now I don’t understand nothing,” Del Potro commented. “I think it’s the best final ever in my life. If I beat Roger in three sets straight that’s better, but it’s impossible.”
Having got over early match nerves the Argentine giant showed great poise to win the second and fourth sets on tie-breaks and having denied Federer a simple victory he then dominated the fifth and deciding set.
Del Potro zipped a forehand crosscourt winner past Federer for a break and a 2-0 lead in the crucial set and denied the top seed on a break chance in the third game on his way to a 5-2 lead.
Federer served to stay in the match but found himself down two match points, both squandered by Del Potro.
But Federer’s 11th double fault gave Del Potro another chance and he made the most of it, winning when Federer sent a forehand over the baseline.
Del Potro fell to the court on his back and began to cry.
But one person refusing to shed any tears was Federer.
The all-time great hadn’t lost a match at the US Open since 2003. However, having finally won at Roland Garros then? reclaimed his Wimbledon crown and world No.1 ranking along with becoming a father for the first time, the Swiss realised he’s had a good summer regardless of finally experiencing some Flushing Meadows misery.
“This one I think is easy to get over just because I’ve had the most amazing summer,” he said. “I tried everything, you know. Didn’t work. I missed chances. He played well and in the end it was a tough fifth set. It’s acceptable. But life goes on. No problem. That’s the way it goes sometimes.
“But the year has been amazing already and it’s not over yet. Got married and had kids, don’t know how much more I want.”
Still, the manner of Federer’s defeat came as a surprise as, in contrast to the French Open, where he struggled all the way, the Swiss star had looked imperious throughout the fortnight.
The wins in Paris and London appeared to have lifted a weight off his shoulders and he was once again playing with the flair and panache that marked his game in 2006 and 2007, when he won three out of the four Grand Slam titles in each year.
But on Sunday Del Potro served notice he’s now a major force.
