ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Saturday directed Pakistan Railways to use the grand saloon used by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto for tourism and generate revenue to improve its services.
Handing over the saloon at a ceremony at the Margalla Railway Station, Prime Minister Gilani said the saloon was used by the late leader for election campaign and now he was handing it over to the Railways to be used for getting more funds.
“Those who can afford to use it may utilize it,” Gilani said and added that these cannot be used anymore by the heads of government or state because of security concerns.
The Prime Minister said his government was committed to improving the Railways and revolutionize the service to turn it from an organization going in deficit to a profit bearing one.
He recalled his tenure as the minister for railways and said the organization made remarkable progress and thousands of new jobs were created.
Gilani said Pakistan Railway was an empire with its own budget and people desired to be a part of the prestigious organization. He also recalled how the big transporters were made part of the Pakistan Railways Board that led to the eventual closure of many profitable trains.
The Prime Minister said there was a need to double the railway track and his government would try to do something in this regard.
