The way we dress, our choice of friends and even the manner we speak to waiters in a restaurant - they can all give away hints about our personality.
But who’d have thought that the way we sign our name or write out a shopping list could let people in on our innermost secrets and family turmoils?
According to Riddhi Doshi, a person’s handwriting can reveal a whole world beyond what type of pen they prefer to use.
Riddhi, 25, a graphologist - or handwriting analyst - claims she can detect everything from whether a person is suffering from an illness to how truthful they are.
“Graphology is a science of the subconscious mind. Nobody has taught us how to write - we may have been taught joined writing at school, but everyone develops their own style of writing and the reason for this is because we all have a different mindset. We all have different characteristics,” explains Riddhi.
“Our brain tells our hand to write in a particular way, and if there are certain thoughts in our mind that shows in our handwriting.
“For example, loops in letters tend to indicate a person lies a lot.
“When I was in college, I was lying to my mum and developed loops in my letters. That was ten years ago, but it is still my characteristic.”
Riddhi, who has a Masters degree in finance and gave up a conventional job in a bank to study graphology, says by looking at hand-writing and identifying a person’s characteristics, she can attempt to address and alter a person’s behaviour.
“I work with a lot of teenagers and I tell them to stop the loops, because they don’t need to lie.
“The way you write can affect your personality just as your personality affects your handwriting. We do reverse psychology to take care of handwriting to change personality.”
To put it to the test, I asked Riddhi to analyse my handwriting.
Using a magnifying glass, a ruler to measure the size of the letters and other tools, it took her three to four hours to work out what kind of a person I was.
Successfully pointing out that I’m very close to my family (but most people tend to be don’t they?), she rather surprisingly also noted that my mother has taken a lot of my responsibilities throughout my life and asked if my father was busy or away while I was growing up.
She says she could see this particularly through my signature, how the ‘D’ of my surname seemed to wrap itself around my first name - which indicated a mother’s protection. And there was me thinking I’d just created a cool signature back when I was 15.
She went on to describe how those who put a full stop in between their first name and surname are ‘interesting characters’ who create a barrier between themselves and their family.
“They live a Jekyll-n-Hyde existence. At home, they’re a loving, caring brother, mother, father or sister, but take them away from home and they are party animals waiting to run amok!”
Riddhi says graphology is important because it can help people understand their strengths and weaknesses and know which areas they need to improve on. ?? ?
For example, those who don’t finish the loops on their ‘g’ or ‘y’ may not be good at finishing tasks and need to work on seeing a plan through to the end.
One part of the analysis that I could understand was how she came to the conclusion that I’m conscientious. She actually described me as a “complete workaholic” which I don’t think is strictly true, but I’ll leave in incase the CEO is reading this piece.
Riddhi explained that when asked to submit an A4 piece of writing I started at the very top of the page and wrote my sentences to the absolute end of the line without drawing on a margin or leaving many spaces.
She says filling the entire page in this way reveals I keep myself busy even when there is no work and don’t tend to waste time.
It’s true, I can’t watch a film at home without setting up the ironing board or stopping the movie halfway through to complete some other task.
But maybe the fact there was coffee and nail polish spilt on the page I submitted was more of a giveaway about my busy mind than the letters I wrote!

Want to try your hand at graphology? Here is a very basic guide to work out what your handwriting reveals about you:
* Messy handwriting often indicates that a person is secretive.
* If your handwriting slopes to the left, it means you keep your feelings to yourself. If it slopes to the right, you’re honest and open with your feelings.
* If the letters you write don’t touch within individual words, it shows you’re quite artistic. If the letters join, it indicates you are a very cautious person.
* Rounded writing means you are a logical person who is a perfectionist. If the letters are pointed, it shows you are quick thinking and perceptive.
