Simon Pluckrose finds out from behind the wheel of a dune buggy…

Why head out to the hot desert, when you can sit by a cool pool?
It is easy to dismiss the desert as hot and barren and stick to the air-conditioned comforts of the city. But doing so means that you are missing out on some of this country’s most stunning scenery - and also some of its most exciting activities, such as doing an Arabian Adventures’ ‘Sandriders’ safari.

Was this your first trip to the desert?
This was my second venture into the desert, the first driving a 4×4 with a group of colleagues. Sandriders, though, was a different experience. You have the choice of either one-seater or two-seater buggies that have roofs but are open to the air, giving you a real sense of being exposed to the elements.
We booked over the phone and were picked up at the Hilton hotel in JBR. The driver took us out into the desert and after about 40 minutes we arrived at our venue. From the minute we entered the car, the staff were extremely friendly and professional.

How are the buggies?
Joining a group of about a dozen other people, we got the first sight of our vehicles. Red and green off-road, fully-automatic buggies, gleaming in the sunshine. They looked like fun. Next up was a safety briefing from our instructor. He was very clear, very thorough and gave us a run-through of the dos and don’ts. Once this was done, it was time to get strapped in. The seat belt is a racing-style harness and googles and helmets were mandatory for safety.

Were you then left to your own devices?
No, the buggies were very easy to drive, but the instructor led the convoy into the desert, while a second instructor kept up the rear to make sure that no stragglers got lost.
We weaved our way through the dunes in single file at a reasonable pace at first, with the instructor pointing out wildlife as we went, such as gazelles and lizards basking in the sun.
However, once the confidence picked up, so did the pace and the size of the dunes. Sightseeing was suddenly a bit tricky and the concentration was solely focused on the driving.

Did you enjoy it?
The buggies were great fun, really nippy and able to climb and descend the dunes with ease.
And some of the dunes were pretty high, giving the feeling of being on a rollercoaster as you just couldn’t see what was ahead of you until you were over the rise. After about half an hour, we stopped for a break and a drink. Then it was time to swap drivers and tackle the second half of the adventure.? We drove for about an hour in total before returning to base. Just about everyone agreed they could happily go out again, but sadly it was time to go home.

Any tips?
You need half a day - from the morning - for this trip, and it’s advisable to wear lightweight clothing and closed shoes. And don’t forget the sun cream!
