With all the knocking our nation’s had over the last week, Georgina Wilson-Powell takes to the streets to find the bright side of life and ask what people love about living here
Today the UAE celebrates 38 years since it was created.
Birthdays should be a happy occasion but let’s face it, 2009 hasn’t been the easiest year all round.
What with all the Dubai-bashing going on in the international press and the financial doom and gloom, it’s all too easy to be negative about the region.
But the UAE still has an international flavour - its residents have been drawn from all over the world - so, amid the criticism, what is it about this part of the world that makes them stay?
Egyptian Amir Demain, Product Manager
“Life is easy here, the quality of life is better than other places. It’s a great mix of being an Arab country and not an Arab country.
“We can speak Arabic but people are open-minded and everyone wants to work and has the same goals. We have the best of everything in Dubai.
Everything is new and that becomes the standard that you judge other cities by. It makes you look at everything differently.”
Filipino Jorji Rubio, waiter
“I definitely like it here, I’ve been here for seven years because I can earn money. I have relations here and friends of all nationalities. Also, have you seen the weather in the Philippines recently? The weather’s great here, compared to back home!”
Indian Amir Hussain, businessman
“I used to live in London and moved here about nine years ago because Dubai is great for business I find. There are lots of opportunities here despite everything that the newspapers say. I set up a new business four months ago and it’s going great. Dubai has always been a trading hub and that will carry on regardless. We love being outdoors at this time of year.”
Dutch Greg Stewart, contactor
“I love Dubai as it’s so central for me as I travel every month with my work. It’s an easy place to come and go from for all the world. There’s a real diversity to the city as well as it tends to attract world travellers and I guess the shopping is pretty good as well - if you’re into that sort of thing!”
Emirati Nayef Abdulla, engineer
“Now that the weather has cooled down a bit I love to go camping in the desert. We go to the big sand dunes outside Hatta or out past Mirdif and take the boys and some bikes and have a barbeque and just chill out. I also like going to the beaches at hotels on the weekend so that you’ve got a nice cold pool to jump into when it gets too hot. Basically I love anything that you can do outdoors.”
Filipino Mark Cabalhin, Toy demonstrator “I came here a year ago to find work and to have a bright future and I love it here.
“It’s fun, I love my job and it’s like the whole world in one capital state. All the buildings are different and there are so many nationalities here but there’s real unity too.”
