The UAE government is on track to phase out plastic bags by 2012, and some supermarkets have already downgraded the quality of their free plastic bags to encourage shoppers to buy the reusable ones. 6 Get A Furry Friend
Feline Friends works hard to improve the lives of cats, rescuing them, caring for them, and finding them new homes. 8 Love Food, But Hate Waste
According to research, people tend to throw away a third of their grocery shopping in waste. Imagine if the supermarket cashier asked you to put 35 per cent of your weekly shopping straight into the bin - you would kick up a fuss, but that’s effectively what happens when we buy goods that we don’t use. Get tips on shopping wisely and eliminating food waste, therefore saving money, from www.lovefoodhatewaste.com
9 Step Up For Charity
There are 52 floors in the Emirates Towers, and each year hundreds of brave-legged residents run from the ground floor to the top in aid of charity. The Vertical Marathon aims to raise funds for Medicins Sans Frontiers, and all participants need to pay dhs500 to take part (which can come from an individual contribution or through sponsorships).
Teams and individuals can take part - for information visit www.jumeirah.com or www.msfuae.org
10 Keep Your Car Parked
We live in a society where a car is seen as a necessity, but next time your reach for those car keys, ask yourself whether you really need to make that trip. Do you really need that bottle of milk now? Combine trips to cut car usage and you’ll help reduce carbon emissions that damage the environment. Or, now that the weather is cooler, do something really crazy and walk to your local shop instead.
