All by myself

Being alone may fill some women of a certain age with dread, but going solo has never been more popular. Jane Plunkett takes a look at the single life in Dubai

While enjoying a catch up with the girls recently, one of them divulged something quite shocking. She’d just discovered an invite to a friend’s wedding hadn’t got ‘lost in the post’ as she’d first feared.

It was far worse. She hadn’t actually been invited to the wedding in the first place.

The reason? Because she’s single and (at the ripe old age of 35) the bride thought the situation would make her feel uncomfortable. It seems an archaic way of thinking; that being a single female at a certain age is still regarded by some as a social taboo!

A quick look around Celebville reveals a list of young women - Jennifer Aniston, 40, Cameron Diaz, 36 and the UK’s Lisa Snowdon, 38 - who are gorgeous, intelligent, successful, and proud singles.

And it’s not only the celebrity contingency who are revelling in the freedom of being modern, single women.

Recent research has unveiled the total of one-person households worldwide rose from 154.5 million in 1999 to 202.6 million in 2006.

In Europe, 28.9 per cent of all households are now single and according to the Office for National Statistics, the number of people living alone in the UK has doubled in a generation.

This equates to some 690,480 women - double the number of 20 years ago, when there were approximately just 345,000. It seems that no longer faced with the danger of being left economically and socially vulnerable, many more women are less keen on getting hitched these days.

“Women are placing greater emphasis on their careers and education and maybe as a result, they’re less likely to compromise on their choice of partner,” says Doctor Victoria Lukats, psychiatrist and dating expert.

“They’d rather be single than be with someone who’s not right for them.”

So why the pitying looks from certain family members, friends, and even the odd stranger, when you say that you’re single?

In Dubai there are plenty of unattached women - including those who have recently come out of a relationship or those who moved here alone to take up a job.

Dubai-based marketing executive Rita Wavers, 31, from the UK, is newly single. She says she hasn’t been on the receiving end of any obvious ‘single-sympathy’, and says that she is happy to be single at this moment in her life.

“I know it will not be forever and I know one day I will find the right person, if it means being single for few more years then fine with me,” says Rita.

“I do not want to just be in relationship for the sake of it. I would rather be single than in the wrong relationship that is for sure.

“Too many people settle because they are scared to be alone and these people then find themselves miserable and divorced five years later. Almost 50 per cent of all UK marriages end in divorce, as did my parents.

“I worry that will happen to me too, so I need to be sure that the person I am with is right,” she adds.

Unlike Rita, recent-divorcee Aisha Rihana, 28, from India and working in Dubai, has found that after a certain age, being single comes with a tonne of pressure - specifically after a divorce.

“Try as I may to disregard the hushed tones and raised eyebrows, after awhile it begins to affect me. And everyone wants to know why I’m single again,” says Aisha.

“Culturally, I have become the gossip central around my circles. I now have a vague idea of how celebs feel with constant paparazzi attention around them.

“No one really has a clue why I broke up with my husband - but I have heard of secret bets behind my back figuring out the cause; snoring being one of them,” Aisha adds.

Apart from lingerie stores now being off limits: “Why would I want to wear a lacy bra and panties when no-one will see them but my cat,” laughs Aisha. Social activities and even holidays have also become an ‘issue’ for Aisha.

“Going on holiday is tricky. If you do not have a group of like-minded single friends, your only choice is to visit friends that live in cities around the world,” she says.

“But I want to go on a stay-in-a-hotel kind of holiday. I might have to find a man for that to happen.”

As Aisha’s divorce is still quite raw, she admits to having very bad days being single, but says there are good days too, and that thankfully “good wins overall”.

Many people spend years waiting for an ideal partner or ‘soul mate’ to make them feel comfortable. But experts say remember it’s about having a full, happy, successful and financially secure life - with or without a partner.
